Ancient Chinese New Year Celebration at Friendship Village

dancers perform at Friendship Village of SchaumburgThe Chinese New Year is one of the most important holidays of the year and it is also the longest, lasting 15 days. While the traditions of the New Year vary widely among different regions of the country, Friendship Village chose to celebrate it with music, songs and dances preformed by the Chicago Northwest Suburban Chinese School.

Assembly Hall was energized by the residents, performers and their families during the one-hour performance which included cameo appearances by the school principal, Lawrence Jong. The intricately crafted costumes awash with vibrant colors rhythmically moved with the dancers who demonstrated a wide repertoire from traditional Chinese opera to folk dance, even a rendition of “My Heart Will Go On,” the theme from the movie Titanic.

Donna Brown, Lifestyle Activity Program Coordinator was especially pleased with the performance saying, “The Northwest Suburban Chinese School performance was incredible! It was one of the best events I have seen here at Friendship Village.”
