2009 Silver Games

Friendship Village Silver Games medal winners

At the second annual Silver Games competition in September, Friendship Village and the Schaumburg Park District teamed up again to bring two days of friendly competition to people 62 and older in 26 events.  Swimming races, a triathlon, fishing derby, Bocce Ball, Texas Hold’em, putting and other favorite activities drew approximately 80 competitors from the area, including 62 who live at Friendship Village.

The first day of competition was held at Friendship Village, where Village President Al Larson presided over the opening ceremony.  Competitors donned event T-shirts and enjoyed a continental breakfast before the first games commenced.  Goodie bags and a hearty Italian dinner fueled the fierce competitors.

Bridgewater Place resident Velma Robinson won the 1st Place title in both the Shuffleboard and Home Run Derby contests.  All three of her sons, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren were on hand to celebrate her success in the Home Run Derby, where she out-hit four men to capture the title.

“I decided when I moved to Friendship Village five months ago that I was going to get involved and learn new things — and I sure have!” Velma said. “The Silver Games was a great activity that was very well-organized.  There is so much going on here that you have to pick and choose what to do, but Silver Games will be on my list for next year.”

Day 2 was held at the Schaumburg Park District’s Community Recreation Center.

“Our second annual Silver Games was an opportunity for competitors from throughout the local community to exercise their bodies and their brains through friendly competition and fun,”  said Mike McCann, director of Lifestyles at Friendship Village.
